Fat People Are Funny
Fat people are funny. Hmmm. I'm not saying that all fat people are comedians. Despite the overwhelmingly disproportionate numbers of fat comedians -- your John Candy, your Chris Farley, your Adam Sandler in 10 years -- I don't think fat people are any better at telling jokes than normal people. No, a better way to put it would be to say that fat people are gross, and gross is funny.
Like "Fat Babe". For most critics, Fat Babe was the low point for Austin Powers 2. But ah ha! What is most critics' low point is Mired's high point. Fat Babe, aside from being "damn sexy", was damn funny.
Usually, humor with fat people attempts to engender audience sympathy. See? The fat people are just like you or me. Rolly-polly, clownish versions of you or me. But the new "Fat Babe" line of thinking is opposed to such crap. Fat people are different -- bigger, greasier, hungrier -- than you or me. Look at them. Look at them and laugh.
It's not brand-new, of course, this ha-ha tactic. There was that unsympathetic fat person in "Heathers" who tried to kill herself. The funniest moment in the otherwise unfunny "The Wedding Singer" was when Sandler has a breakdown on stage and starts pointing out the fat and ugly people in the audience. Awful "South Park" succeeds only when it's ridiculing Cartman. (Even George Lucas gets it with his "Hutt" characters -- Mrs. Hutt was the comedic highpoint of "The Phantom Lardass".) Todd Solondz's unpleasant masterpiece "Happiness" shows that fat people are different: they're unhappy with their bodies and thus with sex, inclined to watch TV eating ice cream, and targets of chubby-chasing pervert rapists who unfortunately must be chopped up into freezer-bag size pieces. Yes, Camryn, you ARE fat. On that we agree.
And John Waters' "Hairspray" was one big excursion on how funny fat people look. (A favorite theme of his, the toothpick.) And it had good effect: "Hairspray" probably caused dramatic psychological trauma in its star so much so that she had to lose weight and become the host of a talk show in which fat people are mocked.
Anyway, I hope Fat Babe returns for AP3 and furthers the Fat = Funny movement. It's a step in the right direction. Lose some weight.
